Big news out of Michigan with nearly 50,000 Ford Mustang Mach-E recall issued as well as a stop sale on new models.
This recall of the Ford Mustang Mach-E represents nearly half of all Mach-E’s built from May 27, 2020, through May 24, 2022, at Ford’s Cuautitlan plant in Mexico. It will include 2021 and 2022 models.
The news was revealed in a dealer notice Ford sent to dealers on Monday, June 13, 2022.
What’s this Ford Mustang Mach-E recall about?
The problem with the Mach-E has to do with a loss of power while driving or stationary causing the vehicle to become immobile. This could cause a collision, and one that might not be easy to explain via arbitration in a car crash case.
According to the notice, the problem involves a potential overheating of the vehicle’s high voltage battery main contactors. This is an electronically controlled switch for the power circuit. When this overheats, the Mustang Mach-E may not start and could immediately lose power while driving.
Ford says it has submitted a recall petition to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) starting the process.
According to the NHTSA website, this is not the first recall for the Mach-E with other issues ranging from software errors, loose subframe bolts and inadequate bonding for the vehicle’s glass panel roofs.
Ford says it expects to have a solution in the third quarter of 2022 and they will notify customers once they have repair instructions and parts.
A part of the solution will be a software update to the “Secondary On-Board Diagnostic Control Module and Battery Energy Control Module,” according to Said Deep, Ford Spokesman in a CNBC story. This update will be done over the air or in person at a dealer.
The bottom line
The newness of electric vehicle technology finally getting out to the masses will likely mean more hiccups like this in the future unfortunately. If you have a Mustang Mach-E, you’ll want to take this recall seriously and consider parking it until a permanent fix is found.
