As we swung into the beginning of the pandemic in the summer of 2020, people discovered overlanding, which allowed them to travel while being safely outside and away from other humans. So, more automakers are jumping on the bandwagon and showcasing what could be with interesting concepts and aftermarket accessories at this year’s Overland Expo Mountain West 2021 where GMC is showcasing its Canyon AT4 OverlandX Concept.

GMC starts with the Canyon AT4, which has a base price of $38,400, and goes from there, adding in-truck and off-road accessories to make this a truck fit for a survivalist.

In terms of the go-anywhere accessories, you’re looking at:

  • Factory-lifted, wide off-road chassis with enhanced underbody coverage
  • Off-road rocker panel protectors
  • Cast-iron control arms
  • Heavy-duty front bumper with winch
  • Integrated front recovery points
  • Front and rear electronic locking differentials
  • Wheel flares with integrated task lamps
  • Multimatic DSSV dampers
  • Spare tire swivel mount
  • Guy lines for protecting the windshield from low-hanging branches
  • 33-inch BFGoodrich KM3 Mud-Terrain tires on 17-inch AEV Crestone wheels

This means the truck would have a 10-inch ground clearance and could ford up to 32.1 inches of water.

With more than 20 premium off-roading features, the GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX concept was designed to be everything an overlanding enthusiast needs. Confident capability comes from features like the truck’s heavy-duty front bumper with winch, front and rear electronic locking differentials, and 33-inch BFGoodrich KM3 Mud-Terrain tires, enabling a 27.7-degree approach angle and 10.0 inches of ground clearance. For longer adventures, drivers could enjoy the convenience of features like a camp kitchen, topper-mounted tent and truck bed storage system. (Image courtesy of General Motors)

And if you’re looking at accessories for camping, the GMC Canyon AT4 OverlandX provides the following:

  • Roof-mounted tent
  • 270-degree awning
  • Jerry cans for gasoline and water
  • Traction boards
  • Off-road jack and mount
  • Cooler and kitchenette
  • Truck bed storage with drawer system
  • Solar panel

If only it provided a shower and toilet, I’d be totally in.

The bottom line on the GMC Canyon AT4 OverlandX Concept

Forget overlanding, bring on the zombie apocalypse. This concept looks like it can tackle any terrain while fighting off someone who wants to eat your brains – all while giving you the accessories you need to make a cup of hot coffee in the morning.

Seriously, though, this concept shows off all the cool possibilities for owners to accessorize their trucks for any eventuality.
