More teasers for the 2022 Toyota Tundra came out today with a video showing the iForce Max nameplate on top of an engine. This is confirms suspicions about a trademark Toyota filed a while ago.
The iForce name for engines has long been a part of the Toyota Tundra and Toyota says this will be the “next generation of heroic iForce performance” for the all new 2022 Tundra.
Currently, the Toyota Tundra has an iForce 5.7-liter 8 engine, mated to a 6-speed transmission as its only option with 390 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. If this new iForce Max uses the recently revealed Toyota Land Cruiser 3.5-liter V-6 engine, this could be the engine Toyota says will “blow you away.”
There is also going to be a second engine, however, we don’t have any details at this time.
The 300 series Land Cruiser, not coming to the U.S., will produce 409 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a 10-speed transmission. This much power would be a big upgrade for the Tundra — along with similar weight savings the Land Cruiser is expected to have when it hits dealer lots.
Basically, you’ll have a more powerful and lighter Tundra, which should address its big weakness: fuel economy. However, with small-displacement engines such as the Ford F-150 PowerBoost, tapping into that power will come at the expense of fuel economy. Hopefully, Toyota has figured out a way to overcome this issue.
What will the 2022 Toyota Tundra look like?
While we still don’t know exactly what it will look like, but we did receive a teaser image showing the front end and we have some renderings from a Russian website: Kolesa.RU.
These renderings show a pretty polarizing front end design which would be exactly what Toyota looks for in their trucks to help them stand apart. Through our many interviews with Toyota Chief Engineer Mike Sweers, we know he likes taking risks with design since he knows Toyota will never be a big player in the half-ton segment.
We also know the new Tundra will utilize the F1 Architecture, which will be used on future Tacoma, 4Runner and Sequoia models in order to share parts and reduce costs.
Finally, we don’t know when the new Tundra will be unveiled, however, we have heard it will begin production in November with the goal of being on dealer lots by December.
