Nissan is adding a new flavor to the 2027 Frontier lineup, and this one feels aimed squarely at buyers who want a more rugged-looking midsize truck without jumping all the way to the PRO-4X.

The new 2027 Nissan Frontier Sport Edition brings PRO-4X-inspired design, all-terrain tires, and extra off-road attitude to the popular SV trim, making it an interesting middle-ground option in the Frontier family, especially for shoppers who like the look of the more aggressive trims but do not necessarily need the full off-road hardware package.

Here are the key things that make the Frontier Sport Edition stand out in the lineup.

It gives the SV trim a tougher personality

The Sport Edition package is available on Frontier SV 4×4 and 4×2 configurations, which is important because SV is one of the more mainstream trims in the lineup. Instead of forcing buyers to step up to PRO-X or PRO-4X for a more rugged look, Nissan is bringing some of that visual attitude to a more cost-conscious trim.

The package adds a black lower front fascia, black grille, and black mirrors, plus Sport badging on the bedside and tailgate. Inside, the truck gets black upholstery with yellow accent stitching.

The Sport Edition has its own identity without completely changing what the SV is meant to be: a practical midsize pickup with enough equipment to feel modern, but not as specialized as the PRO trims.

It brings all-terrain tires to more Frontier buyers

The biggest functional upgrade here is the addition of 265/70R17 Hankook Dynapro all-terrain tires wrapped around black 17-inch off-road-style wheels.

Tires are among the most meaningful upgrades for truck owners who spend time on gravel roads, muddy job sites, ranch roads, trailheads, or light off-road trails. No, this does not make the Sport Edition a PRO-4X, but it does give SV buyers more confidence right from the dealership.

For shoppers who would otherwise buy an SV and immediately start looking at aftermarket wheels and tires, this package could make a lot of sense.

It has PRO-4X-inspired looks, but it is not trying to be a PRO-4X

The Frontier Sport Edition borrows some visual inspiration from the PRO-X and PRO-4X trims, but it does not replace either one. The PRO-X and PRO-4X still sit higher in the lineup for buyers who want the more dedicated off-road setup. PRO-X and PRO-4X models include Bilstein suspension components, black 17-inch wheels, all-terrain tires and a more rugged appearance, while PRO-4X adds an electronic locking rear differential.

The Sport Edition, meanwhile, is more of a bridge between the regular SV and the more aggressive PRO models. It gives buyers a tougher look, all-terrain tires, LED fog lights, front accent lighting, and added skid plate protection, but it keeps the SV positioning.

Not every truck buyer needs the top off-road trim, but plenty of them want the look.

It keeps the Frontier’s standard V6 power

One thing Nissan has done well with the Frontier is keeping the powertrain simple. Every 2027 Frontier gets a 3.8-liter V6, rated at 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque. Nissan has been leaning into this heavily as an advantage in the market with the likes of segment-sales-leader Toyota Tacoma going exclusively 4-cylinder, along with Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon.

That gives the Sport Edition the same basic power story as the rest of the lineup. There is no smaller engine to avoid and no complicated powertrain ladder to decode. You pick the cab, bed, drive configuration, and trim that works for you.

The 2027 Frontier can tow up to 7,150 pounds when properly equipped, and Trailer Sway Control is standard on SV and PRO trims.

It adds style without losing daily-driver usefulness

The Sport Edition is not just about looking tougher in the parking lot. It also keeps the tech and convenience features buyers expect in a modern midsize truck.

The 2027 Frontier offers a standard 8-inch touchscreen, with an available 12.3-inch infotainment screen on SV and PRO trims. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available on SV and PRO trims, and the truck offers up to four USB ports.

For 2027, Nissan also upgrades the available wireless phone charger in the PRO Convenience package to the Qi2 standard, which uses magnets to better align the phone and includes a fan to help keep the device cooler while charging.

Plus, all 2027 Frontier trims come with standard safety and driver assistance features, including Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Parking Sensors, High Beam Assist, and Intelligent Cruise Control.

The 2027 Nissan Frontier lineup includes S, SV, PRO-X, and PRO-4X trims, with King Cab or Crew Cab body styles depending on configuration. Nissan also offers personalization packages, including Dark Armor, Sport Edition, and PRO-4X R.

That gives buyers a pretty clear spread:

  • S is the basic work-truck-style entry point.
  • SV is the more mainstream volume trim.
  • Sport Edition gives SV buyers a tougher, more adventure-focused look and all-terrain tires.
  • PRO-X brings more off-road styling and equipment for 4×2 buyers.
  • PRO-4X is the more serious off-road choice, with 4×4 and an electronic locking rear differential.
  • PRO-4X R pushes the off-road look and capability even further with more aggressive Hankook Dynapro AT2 Xtreme all-terrain tires and unique accents.

So, what makes the Sport Edition special? It is not the most capable Frontier, and it is not supposed to be. Its job is to make the SV more exciting by adding the kind of rugged design and tire package many midsize truck shoppers already want.

The Bottom Line

The 2027 Nissan Frontier Sport Edition feels like a smart addition to the lineup because it fills a real gap. It gives buyers the attitude of a more rugged Frontier without requiring them to move all the way up to PRO-4X.

For shoppers who want a daily-drivable midsize truck with a standard V6, available 4×4, all-terrain tires, and a little more personality, the Sport Edition could be the sweet spot in the 2027 Frontier lineup.

Pricing has not been announced yet, but Nissan says the 2027 Frontier will reach dealerships later this summer.
