Chronology
On January 15, 2026, an issue pertaining to stripped windshield wiper arm splines on certain Expedition
and Navigator vehicles was brought to Ford´s Critical Concern Review Group for review. During review
of safety recall 22S26 (NHTSA 22V250), which was conducted pursuant to the three-year recall
lookback initiated as part of the Consent Order entered into by Ford and NHTSA in 2024, Ford observed
an elevated warranty claim rate for Expedition and Navigator vehicles produced after the 22S26/22V250
population cut-off date through December 2022. The reports described stripped wiper arm splines or
wiper arms detaching from the vehicle.
During January and February 2026, Ford conducted a read-across and assessed field performance data
for vehicles that share the same knurl driver design and supplier. Additionally, the team inspected field
return parts to evaluate conformance to dimensional specifications, conducted Computer Aided
Engineering stress analysis, and reproduced the failure of the returned parts. Ford also reviewed the
supplier’s historic production data, including dimensional data. Based on the read-across findings, Ford expanded the investigation to include Super Duty vehicles manufactured within the same period as the
suspect population of Expedition and Navigator vehicles.
In March 2026, the root cause was determined to be a combination of conditions that led to incorrect
teeth engagement in the arm head-to-knurl interface, which can result in damage due to stripping of the
engagement surfaces. Supplier records confirmed that the combination of conditions was present in
Expedition, Navigator and Super Duty vehicles. Ford verified these findings through statistical life
warranty projections. An improvement in production processes at the supplier in December 2022
addressed the issues that led to the defective wiper arms.
As of March, 16, 2026, Ford is aware of 1,538 warranty reports, 11 field reports, and three customer
service reports associated with this concern, representing 1,533 unique VINs globally, received between
November 11, 2021, and March 2, 2026. As of March 16, 2026, Ford is aware of two Vehicle Owner
Questionnaires (VOQ) attributed to this concern and one potentially related VOQ, which were submitted
between July 2, 2024, and February 24, 2026.
Ford is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to this concern.
On March 24, 2026, Ford’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field service
action.
