GM 5.3L V8 Vortec Oil Consumption Class-Action Lawsuit
The lawsuit was filed 8 years ago according to CarComplaints.com and was settled on October 10, 2025.
It was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California under Siqueiros, et al. v. General Motors LLC (No. 3:16-cv-07244-EMC). This case was about the GM Vortec 5.3L V8 gasoline engine used in many GM vehicles.
These vehicles include:
- 2011-through-2014 Chevy Avalanche
- 2011-through-2014 Chevy Silverado
- 2011-through-2014 Chevy Suburban
- 2011-through-2014 Chevy Tahoe
- 2011-through-2014 GMC Sierra
- 2011-through-2014 GMC Yukon
- 2011-through-2014 GMC Yukon XL
The plaintiffs claim that defective piston rings in the GM Vortec 5.3L engine caused excessive oil consumption, which in turn led to problems like fouled spark plugs, rough idling, reduced performance, and, in extreme cases, complete engine failure. They further allege that GM was aware of the defect and knew the affected vehicles would ultimately fail, but concealed the issue from consumers.
Under the settlement agreement, eligible current owners or lessees of the affected vehicles will receive payments of $3,380 each. The three lead plaintiffs who initiated the lawsuit will receive $30,000 apiece. The settlement applies to customers in California, Idaho, and North Carolina, provided they leased or purchased their vehicles directly from a GM dealer within the specified timeframe.
The largest share of the settlement funds will go to the plaintiffs’ legal team, which is set to receive $57 million in attorneys’ fees. The plaintiffs were represented by Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, P.C., and DiCello Levitt LLP.
