GM Mexico truck plant shutdown extended

The GM Mexico truck plant shutdown is getting extended, and trade tensions as well as labor concerns have people wondering about its future.

GM Mexico truck plant shutdown extended

The Silao, Mexico, plant builds the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks.

In July, the plant was shutdown for two weeks, and that isn’t unusual for General Motors. Its other truck plants — Fort Wayne, Indiana; Flint, Michigan; and Ontario, Canada — also experienced the same seasonal summer shutdown period.

What is unusual is Silao, Mexico, will also be shutdown for the weeks of August 4 and August 11 according to Reuters.com.

GM told the media outlet this nothing out of the ordinary.

“Scheduled down weeks at GM Silao are part of a standard operating process focused on optimizing production at our manufacturing complex.”

There is also news GM is planning on building more trucks in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and retrofitting the Orion Assembly Plant in Orion, Michigan, from electric vehicles into building full-size SUVs and trucks by 2027.

New tariffs and labor disputes

The situation in Mexico is anything but stable at the moment.

On July 12, 2025, President Trump announced he would be putting a 30% tariff on Mexican-made goods coming into the U.S. to take effect on August 1. Currently, automotive parts and vehicles are exempt and it is unclear if they will be in the future.

Also, the Mexican labor unions have been active in recent months in trying to split away from Mexican government interference and raise wages to help workers get out of poverty.

This was supposed to happen under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) effective on January 1, 2025. Workers were supposed to make $278.80 MXN (approximately $13.76 USD) for most of Mexico and $419.88 (approximately $20.72 USD) for the Northern Border Free Zone.

The Silao, Mexico, plant is not within the Northern Border Free Zone.

This spring, 2025 GM Mexico workers at the plant won a pay increase on April 17, 2025, raising the highest-paid employees to $7 USD an hour. This was a record wage increase.

Our take

Wage increases, trade tensions, high interest rates, uncertain economy and plant shutdowns. This year has been a wild ride for automakers, and it doesn’t seem to be getting any smoother.
