I recently drove a 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road pickup for a week and learned why it remains one of the top midsize trucks on the market. It is very good, but I’ll be honest, it’s not great.

2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road overview
The midsize truck king of sales gets a big redo for the 2024 model year. It has a new interior with more headroom and a much better driver’s seat position. Also, a new infotainment screen with Toyota’s new software makes using the cameras and picking a radio station a lot easier.
The old engine and transmission is gone in favor of a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine in either a gasoline-only or a hybrid option mated to an 8-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission. The engine produces 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque which varies slightly based on what trim you get.
It is available in a new Xtracab, think extended cab without a seat or a double cab in either a 5-foot or 6-foot bed.
There’s also a new trim called the Trailhunter for customers looking to do more overlanding trips.
