2022 GMC Sierra 1500 recall

A new 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 recall has been issued for 70,000 trucks that could see part of their grille flying off.

2022 GMC Sierra 1500 recall

General Motors issued a recall for the upper trim piece that attaches to the hood of the Sierra and holds the chrome front grille deflector into place. This piece could break “resulting in grille detachment.”

The recall #25V060000 has been posted to the NHTSA.gov website and it states around 3 percent of the 70,768 trucks included in the recall might have this defect.

GM said it found 1,225 field complaints and 4 reported associated accidents due to this issue.

In the recall report the company stated:”This recall only involves GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles with chrome grille deflectors produced after GM’s 2022 model year mid-cycle enhancement for the Sierra (RPO J22). 2022 model year Sierra 1500 series vehicles produced prior to the mid-cycle enhancement (RPO J21) are not affected by this recall. Vehicles with non-chrome grille deflectors are not part of this recall. 2500/3500 vehicles have a different grille design and are not part of this recall.

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain 2022 model year GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with chrome front grille deflectors. One or more of the attachments that hold the front upper grille deflector in place may fracture over time. If all eight attachment points break, the deflector may detach from the vehicle while driving.”

GM says they have traced the affected vehicles to a specific manufacturing time.

The company was first made aware of the issue in January, 2024 but didn’t see a larger issue.

“On January 19, 2024, a GM employee submitted a report to GM’s Speak Up for Safety (SUFS) program after a customer complaint of a front grille deflector detaching from a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicle while driving. GM opened a product investigation on February 27, 2024, which was closed on May 23, 2024 as no defect trend was identified.

On December 11, 2024, GM opened a new product investigation based on a rise in claim rates identified during continued monitoring of deflector detachments on GMC Sierra vehicles. GM’s investigation identified a suspect build window of vehicles with chrome grille deflectors produced after GM’s mid-cycle enhancement for the 2022 Sierra 1500 series. Chrome deflectors supplied during the suspect manufacturing window may have attachment points that may not adequately withstand expected loads. GM identified 1,225 field complaints potentially related to this condition, including 4 allegations of an associated accident. These complaints were received by GM between April 29, 2022, and December 27, 2024. GM is not aware of any injuries associated with this condition.

On January 30, 2025, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a safety recall.”

Recall notices will be sent out to affected customers and once a repair has been identified owners will bring their trucks to dealerships for a free repair.
